What season is best for family pictures? | Arlington, VA Family Photographer

When having your family photos done there is a lot to consider and picking a season is probably the first place to start. So which season is best for family photography? Well, it’s sort of a trick question because the best season for your family is not the best season for another family. All of my families have their reasons for picking a season. Most families pick a season and stick with it. Life events like pregnancy, birth of a new child, milestone of a baby, or unfortunate events like COVID-19 can throw your normal family pictures off schedule. Now is the time to consider all the reasons that a certain season might be best for your family.

Are you a lover of lower humidity, flowers, and cool nights? Spring is beautiful with new life growing and warmer days setting into our lives. Styling for a Spring session could include pinks, purples, light blue, turquoise, and as always, neutral shades. Many locations are teeming with plant growth, but not bugs! Some families choose Spring because of the flexibility Spring Break and Memorial Day weekend offers. Lots of reasons to love Spring sessions!

The sun is setting later and later as summer goes on. If you have kids who have a later bedtime or you enjoy a cool summer night, then this season is for you. School is out, family is visiting, or maybe you’re traveling to the Northern Virginia area - a relaxed schedule is a great way to think about summer sessions.  The plants and tall grasses are fully grown and wildflowers are out.  We all have a bit more sun-kissed skin too.

Ah, the colors of the Fall leaves. The air is brisk and schedules are falling back into place. The warm tones of Fall lend to styling colors like burgundy, navy, mustard, maroon, taupe, and forest green. Fall tends to be busy with sports, school starting, and fun outdoor activities so scheduling might be tricky for your family.

This season is slowly becoming one of my favorites. If you have the right location (I have a few) with tall grasses and evergreen trees, then winter can shine like any other season. With all the bugs tucked away we have freedom to tromp around a bit more. Life is a bit slower after the holiday season which makes scheduling your session easier. For winter session I pick 2 dates right from the start just in case its too cold.

Maybe now is the time to switch up your family photography “schedule” and consider a new season for pictures. Whatever season is best for your family, contact me to get started with your booking.
